This Girl Quit Her Job at Microsoft By Singing a Song on YouTube [Video]

Set to the tune of Don McLean's American Pie, Karen Chang sang an epic song announcing her resignation from Microsoft that included quips about making "cells and numbers dance", "long lines of code" and where she's going next. Everyone who resigns from their job should be forced to do a song and dance number like this. [YouTube via Neatorama] More »

Travis Browne and Matt Brown highlight UFC 145 preliminary card

UFC 145's preliminary card wasn't one to remember, though Travis Browne, Matt Brown and Chris Clements gave memorable performances in Atlanta on Saturday night.

Travis Browne pulled out the submission of the night with a triangle choke of Chad Griggs in the first round. Browne knocked Griggs to the ground with knees, then used a textbook choke to take out Griggs at 2:29 in the first.

Despite tiring out early, Matt Brown stopped the quick ascent of Stephen Thompson with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 30-27, 29-27, 30-27 for Brown. Matt Brown grabbed a calf slicer in the first round, but Thompson worked his way out. In the second, Thompson controlled most of the round, landing shots as an exhausted Brown couldn't answer, until the final minute. Brown knocked Thompson to the ground with an elbow, then used ground and pound until the round ended. Those elbows opened a large cut on Brown's forehead. Thompson had better stand-up early in the third, but Brown's takedown and triangle choke late in the third round kept Thompson from fighting back.

Unsurprisingly, Anthony Njokuani and John Makdessi's bout turned into a kicking contest, with Njokuani taking the bout 30-27 on all three judges' cards. Njokuani kept his distance while landing kicks to the abdomen and legs of Makdessi. Makdessi could never move inside enough to actually get some offense.

On an injured ankle, Mac Danzig won a decision 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 over Efrain Escudero. Escudero caught Danzig with a heel hook early, but Danzig defended by spinning out and taking Escudero's back before they returned to their feet in the first round. Danzig used a clinch in the second to control Escudero. On an ankle severely swollen from the heel hook, Danzig came out strong in the third, somehow having good movement. He returned to the clinch, again controlling Escudero against the fence.

Chris Clements won an exciting, back and forth split decision with Keith Wisniewski, 29-28, 28-29, 29-28. Wisniewski got a takedown early in the first round as well as a big forehead cut. After an inexplicable stand-up, Clements knocked Wisniewski to the ground with a spinning back kick to the body. In the second round, Wisniewski took Clements back to try for a rear naked choke, but Clements threw elbows into Wisniewski's face. Clements had a much better third round, landing shot after shot that Wisniewski had no answer for.

A lackluster bout started the card in Atlanta, as Marcus Brimage and Maximo Blanco never truly found an offensive attack. Brimage was able to use kicks? to get a bit of an edge, but seemed unsatisfied with his 29-28,? 28-29, 29-28 win.? Afterwards, he and Blanco got into a very odd tumble-off.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)

Finally?Ice Cream Sandwich has arrived. The 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 will be the first tablet?from the manufacturer to ship with Google's latest Android 4.0 mobile operating system right out of the box. Despite the progressive moniker, hardware-wise, the Galaxy Tab 2 is actually a minor step back from Samsung's last 7-inch tablet, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus ($399, 3.5 stars), making concessions in processor speed. Instead of more powerful components and design improvements, Samsung focused on a well-tuned software experience and an affordable price?just $249.99 (list) for 8GB. The result is a very solid tablet that really shows off the latest Android OS, and is competitive on price with the Amazon Kindle Fire ($199, 4 stars) and the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet ($249, 4 stars), and half the price of the class-leading new Apple iPad ($499, 4.5 stars). If you want Ice Cream Sandwich on a small tablet right now, the Galaxy Tab 2 is your best bet.

Physical Design, Features, and Connectivity
Samsung makes some of the best-looking Android tablets you can buy, and the Galaxy Tab 2 is no exception, with its sturdy yet slim build. It's nearly identical to the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, measuring 7.6 by 4.8 by 0.41 inches?(HWD) and 12.13 ounces. The Galaxy Tab 2.0 is thinner and lighter than the Kindle Fire, which measures 7.5 by 4.7 by .45 inches (HWD) and 14.6 ounces, and the Galaxy Tab 2.0's nicely tapered edges only add to the effect. ?

The Galaxy Tab 2 is still a well-built, all-plastic gray slab. Power and Volume buttons, as well as an IR-port, line the right side of tablet, while a microSD card slot (which accepts cards up to 32GB) can be found behind a plastic flap on the left side. A 3.5mm headphone jack sits on top, with Samsung's proprietary docking port on the bottom for charging and syncing with the included cable. The Galaxy Tab 2 retains the 1,024-by-600-pixel TFT LCD of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. That's fairly standard fare for 7-inch tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire, but not quite as good as the 1280-by-800-pixel display found on the T-Mobile Springboard 4G ($429, 3.5 stars).

Samsung downgraded the cameras on the Galaxy Tab 2, with a VGA front-facing and a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera with no LED flash. The original Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus features a 2-megapixel front-facing and 3-megapixel rear-facing camera with an LED flash. The Galaxy Tab 2 is an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi only tablet, with Bluetooth 3.0 and DLNA connectivity. The IR emitter lets you use the tablet as a remote control for a variety of media devices.

Performance and Software
The Galaxy Tab 2 is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor, which is a step back from the dual-core 1.2GHz processor of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Given the less-powerful CPU, it was no surprise that the Galaxy Tab 2 benchmarked significantly slower than the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But with Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, the Galaxy Tab 2 felt just as snappy and responsive. The Galaxy Tab 2 packs a 4,000mAh battery and turned in a respectable 5 hours, 48 minutes of continuous video playback. That's less than the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which turned in 6 hours, 33 minutes, but more than the Kindle Fire's 4 hours, 55 minutes. ?

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich works great on the Galaxy Tab 2, with very smooth animations, responsive app performance, and rock-solid stability, at least during the review period. For a more in-depth look at all of the new features, check out our full Ice Cream Sandwich review.

As with nearly all Samsung devices, Android is heavily skinned with Samsung's signature TouchWiz UI. It comes with the typical array of custom widgets, as well as the useful Quick Action bar, which offers up easy access to the alarm, calculator, e-mail, music player, calendar, task manager, and world clock mini apps. These run seamlessly on top of regular open apps, making for simple multitasking. Samsung also included its various hubs (Media, Reader, Game, and Video), but there are better third-party alternatives like the Amazon Kindle app or Netflix?both of which are also pre-installed. Despite Samsung's heavy OS customizations, everything was extremely snappy and responsive in my tests, proving that you don't need the latest quad-core chip to run the latest version of Android.

Alas, some of the same problems facing older Android 3.2 "Honeycomb" tablets still remain here. There are still few tablet-specific Android apps, and they're not easy to find in Google Play (formerly Android Market). Hopefully, developers will start to write apps for Ice Cream Sandwich, which handles phone and tablet screen differences far better than any previous Android iteration. For now, Apple remains the app king with more than 200,000 third-party iPad-specific programs.

Delay in Internet name expansion continues

NEW YORK (AP) ? There's still no word on when applications will continue for new Internet address suffixes to join ".com" and others in use.

Last week, a technical glitch forced the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is in charge of domain names, to abruptly shut down a system for letting companies and organizations apply for new names.

The system was supposed to have reopened Tuesday, but ICANN said then that it needed more time to inform applicants that may have been affected by the glitch.

ICANN now says it's still testing the fix and sifting through the data to determine which applicants were affected. It gave no target date this time. ICANN says it has ruled out hacking as the cause.

The Truth About The Foreclosure Market - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Unfortunately, along with the increase in foreclosures over the last several years, there has also been a corresponding increase in foreclosure scams. Many businesses have taken profits by taking advantage of unsuspecting home buyers looking to capitalize on the housing crisis, and purchase a first home or vacation home. The sad reality is that many people have fallen victim to these scams because they simply did not understand some basic facts. The facts are that home buyers should first engage a Realtor to find foreclosures. The first and most prevalent scam tactic, and a definite red flag for home buyers, is that a fee is required up-front. The fact is that many companies advertise on the web and other media offering foreclosure lists for a fee. The truth is that Realtors see foreclosures first in the MLS. Asset managers and some banks list REO properties (bank-owned, also known as post-foreclosure) directly with Realtors. Those listings then appear in the MLS and become for sale properties.

Replace or repair? That's the home improvement question | Pro ...

(ARA) ? Maintenance and improvement are both essential realities of home ownership. From windows and skylights to gas ranges and front doors, everything in your home will eventually need some work. But how do you know when something simply needs repair, or merits being replaced?

Of course, each situation will be as unique as the home in which it occurs ? and as individual as the homeowners themselves. A few good rules of thumb, however, do apply in most cases. When you?re considering repair or replacement, ask yourself these questions:

* How old is the malfunctioning item?

* How extensive/pervasive is the problem?

* Will the cost of repair approach the cost of replacement?

* Which course ? repair or replace ? will yield the maximum energy efficiency?

* How does the cost of repair measure up to the value it will provide? How does replacement stack up using the same measure?

To help you get an idea of how these rules apply, here?s what some experts have to say about home elements that frequently raise the repair/replace question:

Skylights

While many modern skylights are energy-efficient, qualify to use the Energy Star mark and are leak-free, if you have an older, plastic model it?s probably a good idea to replace it. Not only are these older plastic bubble-type skylights often faded and unsightly, reducing visibility, they are not UV resistant, are not energy efficient, and are much more likely to leak.

?There are millions of those unattractive, cracked and yellowed plastic skylights still out there,? says Ross Vandermark, national product manager of VELUX America, which markets the warranted ?No-Leak Skylight.? ?Replacing them with new energy-efficient, double-pane (insulating) glass models is quick and easy. They don?t leak, they look better, they reduce UV rays and provide substantial energy savings.?

In fact, based on an estimate of 15 cents per kwh/hr, replacing an old plastic skylight with an Energy Star-qualified VELUX skylight can save a 2,000-square-foot home about $194 a year on cooling costs, a company study shows. Add skylight blinds ? which are available in a variety of styles that can be remote-controlled, including blackout to block light, light filtering to diffuse light, or Venetian to adjust light ? and the energy savings can be enhanced even more. And blinds in colors and patterns can add a fresh look to your room decor. What?s more, depending on the age and condition of even older glass skylights, it?s not a bad idea to consider a modern, more energy efficient model. To learn more about replacement skylights, visit www.veluxusa.com.

Windows

Recent research shows that skylights and vertical windows can work well together to effectively daylight a home while contributing to heating and cooling energy savings.

Like skylights, windows have vastly improved in energy efficiency over the past few decades. Leaky, inefficient windows can be a major source of heat loss in a home, boosting energy bills and decreasing the comfort level indoors. Window manufacturer Pella points to these signs that old windows need to be replaced:

* They?re difficult to open or close.

* You can feel air leaking in or out around them.

* Condensation or fogging occurs on or between glass panes.

* You can see chipping, deterioration or water stains on the window or the wall around it.

* Cleaning is a major chore and you avoid it because of the difficulty.

* It?s difficult or impossible to find replacement parts for the old windows.

The Efficient Windows Collaborative (www.efficientwindows.org) site also provides extensive information on selecting both windows and skylights, including fact sheets and computer simulations for typical houses using a variety of windows in a number of U.S. cities.

Heating, ventilation and air cooling

Furnaces and air conditioning units are among the most important parts of your home?s infrastructure; they?re directly responsible for the comfort level and air quality inside your home. They?re also among the more costly items to repair or replace.

So how do you know when it?s time to replace part of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system? EnergyStar.gov offers these guidelines:

* If your heat pump or air conditioner is older than 10 years.

* Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.

* Your energy bills are spiking.

* Equipment needs frequent repair.

* Some rooms are too hot while others are too cold.

* The HVAC system is very noisy.

* Your home is very dusty.

Replacing older HVAC systems with newer, Energy Star-qualified ones can significantly impact your heating and cooling costs, according to EnergyStar.gov. An Energy Star-qualified heat pump or AC unit can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs, the website says. You can learn more at www.energystar.gov.

UT Dallas researchers hope to imbue your smartphone with X-ray superpowers

If anybody ever told you that the future would be awesome, they were right. A new bit of research has emerged from the University of Texas at Dallas, which describes equipment that may allow people to see through walls -- and if that weren't wild enough, creators of the specialized CMOS imaging hardware believe the same technology could be integrated into our mobile phones. To pull off the feat, the scientists tapped into a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that exists between microwave and infrared known as the terahertz range. Due to privacy concerns, the equipment is being designed to operate at a distance of no more than four inches, but its creator hypothesizes that the technology will still be useful for finding studs in walls, verifying documents and detecting counterfeit currency. In other words, this brand of x-ray vision isn't exactly on par with Superman's abilities, but it's bound to work better than mail order spectacles from Newark.

Kim Kardashian Wants To Be Mayor Of Glendale, California

'I think she would make an excellent mayor,' Glendale city councilman Rafi Manoukian says.

Kim Kardashian may not be Kanye West's Beyoncé, but she does have her sights set on being Glendale, California's next mayor.

In a clip from her sister Khloé's show "Khloé & Lamar," she shared her political aspirations with her baby sister. "I decided ... I'm gonna run for the mayor of Glendale. You have to have full residency in Glendale, so Noelle's going to head my campaign, but it's going to be five years for Glendale. So I have to buy a house there," she said in a clip posted on Aceshowbiz.com. "You have to have residency, so Noelle and I are looking into all the requirements. It's [an] Armenian town. But I need to wait like five years."

While some people are scratching their heads at the thought of her calling the shots for the Cali town, it seems that those who currently live and work there are not against the idea. "I would support her. I think she would make an excellent mayor," city councilman Rafi Manoukian told E! News. And he's not the only one.

City councilman and former mayor Ara Najarian offered to make the reality starlet "honorary chief of staff to my office to help her get acquainted to Glendale," adding that he believes that her dream to run for political office is a "great idea."

Najarian noted that he knows that Kardashian is busy, but she can start small as she readies for her office run. "I know Kim is busy all over the world and all that, but if she's able to come in a few days a week or a few days a month to see how the city works and see all the great things we do," he explained, "if she wants to learn how Glendale runs, this is really the best way to do it."

Her run for office certainly wouldn't be the first time she's attempted to do something outside her comfort zone of posing on step-and-repeats in bandage dresses, selling diet programs and designing clothes. Last year, she tried a short-lived career as a pop star with her track "Jam (Turn It Up)." She even shot a Hype Williams-directed video for it, but, alas, it never saw the light of day.

TV and Movies app for Google TV gets a major refresh

TV and Movies

The TV and Movies app for your Google TV has a major update in process, making the app more personalized to your choices for content, better favorites management, and a star ratings system to help sort it all.

TV and Movies isn't a player -- it's Google's ultimate entertainment search application, sorting content from your cable or satellite provider, apps like Netflix and HBO Go, and even Amazon and providing you with information about programming. With today's additions, things got a little more personal and shows and channels you like will be easier to find. And the star ratings system helps you discover new content based on your previous ratings. Popular services like Netflix already do something similar, but with Google's special sauce on search, we imagine that this will be a great way to discover new content and programs that you really want to see. Last but not least, the Trending this Week shelf gives a list of what's trending on all of Google search from the web, so you have an idea of what other folks are watching and talking about. While we're waiting for the next generation of Google TV hardware, it's great to see the team working some magic on the software side.
