I think we all know that social skills are important in our lives but not everyone has them.?That is a problem for small business owners lacking in this area unless they are geeks with a must-have app. Most of us get business from talking to people, whether it is in our store or shop and perhaps at our counter, or maybe it is at face-to-face networking events or on-line.

The guy who tries to sell all the time by in-your-face tactics at the local breakfast networking meeting or who spams his on-line network on LinkedIn or elsewhere has no social skills. He doesn?t understand how other people feel when they are harassed about a product they are not interested in, or even unfortunately made a tentative enquiry about to their later regret. The woman who follows you relentlessly to sign up to her email marketing products is lacking in empathy with her potential market, which is ironic.

Despite all this I believe that if we know we are lacking in social skills we can adapt and learn them.

I have a sort of confession. I used to lack social skills, due to (I believe) having had a rough time at school. Even when I went out to work I was terribly shy and quiet as a church mouse, so although I was quite the opposite of ?in your face? I found it hard to deal with people, which had a lasting effect on my life.

I learned to come out of my shell later and stand up for myself, and succeed in getting promoted at work, but it was a conscious effort to learn to deal with people; to listen?to their needs?and wants and to understand their perspectives.?Listening is so important in our lives.

Later still in the big wide networking world I had to take another step and learn to speak in public without annoying anyone too severely.

It seems to me that a lot of people lose business because when we dislike their approach, we become prejudiced against their offering. Whether the more aggressive OTT marketers can be reformed in quite the same way as us church mice I don?t know, because they would need some insight and self-awareness, which in introverts is often a strong point.

I should hate to think that all the obnoxious pushy types networking out there are beyond redemption. Do you think that they can save themselves?

Santorum: Romney 'worst Republican' to face Obama

FRANKSVILLE, Wis. (AP) ? An agitated Rick Santorum on Sunday called Mitt Romney "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama" even as it appears the former Massachusetts governor is on pace to clinch the party's nomination in June.

Santorum later lashed out at reporters, using a profane word as he accused them of "distorting" his speech.

Santorum told voters that Romney is "uniquely disqualified" to be the GOP's presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination. Santorum said "the race isn't over until the people of Wisconsin sing," and urged them to give his underfunded, underdog campaign a chance to derail Romney.

"Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama," Santorum said at an evening rally near Racine.

Santorum later tried to clarify that he was talking only about Romney's ability to campaign against the national health care law championed by Obama and the Democrats. But the candidate's temper flared when he was pushed by reporters.

"On the issue of health care. That's what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK?" Santorum told reporters who asked him about the scathing criticism. "Come on, guys, don't do this. I mean, you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare."

Pressed by a reporter from The New York Times, Santorum said: "Quit distorting my words. It's bulls---."

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who attended the event, said Santorum was "panicking in the final stages of his campaign."

"Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day," Williams said. "He sees conservatives coalescing around Mitt Romney and he's rattled by the backlash caused by his suggestion that keeping Barack Obama would be better than electing a Republican."

Campaigning throughout Wisconsin, which has its primary April 3, Santorum hammered Romney as a candidate conservatives should not trust. He seized on a Romney adviser's comment last week that the race's dynamic will change when the GOP settles on a nominee, likening it to an Etch A Sketch toy.

"I have not written my public policy pronouncements on an Etch A Sketch. They are written on my heart," Santorum said in a Fond du Lac bowling alley.

"Gov. Romney has said in response to the Etch A Sketch comment that he wants to assure all of you ? he wants to assure that he will run as a conservative in the fall. Let me assure you, that I'm not going to run as a conservative. I am a conservative."

Santorum also called Romney "the one Republican in America who actually authored the blueprint for Obamacare."

"We have a candidate who is running against me who is uniquely disqualified," he said.

But that candidate is better organized and has a serious advantage on his way to clinching the GOP nomination with 1,144 delegates before the party meets for its convention in Tampa, Fla. Romney has won 568 delegates to Santorum's 273, according to The Associated Press' tally.

Santorum would need 74 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before the national convention in August, and he acknowledges he is unlikely to keep pace with Romney in spending.

"I can't outspend him in Wisconsin. No way," Santorum told supporters here. "But you can outwork him. We can do this."

Withholding Feedback Can Cost You Your Next Promotion ...

Do you believe you can be authentic at work? Or do you have the thought that if you gave your boss direct feedback, that shortly afterwards; you would be looking for a new job? The challenge is, if you choose to withhold, the consequences can be damaging and effect your ability to build trusting relationships, which effects how you engage with your teammates and might end up costing you your next promotion.

Let me explain, I am not telling you to run into work and unconsciously blurt out every thought you are experiencing. However, I am suggesting that you start noticing when you are withholding and the stories you have attached to why you withhold. The key is to break the pattern of this unhealthy behavior. Once you notice that you are withholding from a colleague or your boss ask yourself, ?What am I most afraid of?? Once you understand your own motivation you can begin to build a commitment to reveal instead of conceal.

Here are three questions to help you explore your relationship with feedback:

1. ?Do I want to be known as trustworthy??

2. ?Would I want to be given honest and timely feedback from my colleagues and boss??

3. ?Would I want to give honest and timely feedback to my colleagues/boss??

I suggest you set yourself a goal or make a new commitment. For example; ?I commitment to be honest with those I want to build a deeper relationship with.? Share your new commitment with those close to you at work and at home.

With any new behavior change, it is important to practice it daily for 28 days in a row. Create a reminder in your calendar to check in each day and see if you have withheld information, facts or feelings from an important colleague or your boss. If you have withheld, take action on your new commitment and speak directly to that person. Be aware that you are not speaking from a judgment space, instead take a 100% responsibility for your observations and thoughts, and simply state what is true for you without adding drama.

At the end of the 28 days of practice take time to celebrate your successes and get curious about any on-going impulse to withhold. I have used this practice for many years and it has supported me in creating wonderful professional and personal relationships.

World Water Day 2012: Two innovations for purifying water

Harnessing the bacteria naturally occurring in water and using solar energy are just two innovations that may help bring clean drinking water to the world's poor.

New engineering technologies look to quench the world?s thirst for clean drinking water through cheap, green self-powered purification mechanisms.

Cleaning dirty water generally requires high energy and capital, placing clean water out of reach for many of the world?s poor. But new innovations are making clean water more accessible by lowering the financial and environmental costs of purification.

Want energy with your water? Use bacteria. Engineer Bruce Logan of Penn State University is perfecting a process by which bacteria in wastewater generate the necessary electrical power to clean the water.

Most wastewater contains bacteria, and by altering the chemistry and physics of microbial fuel cell systems, Logan capitalized on the idea that bacteria can produce electric currents under anaerobic conditions where electrons link up with oxygen molecules.

?You and I eat food and generate energy,? Logan told GOOD. So do bacteria. And when those bacteria are deprived of oxygen in a microbial fuel cell, the electrons they produce flow to the other side of the cell to find oxygen protons, creating an electric current as they travel.

Over time, Logan has improved the technologies of the process, including by combining the microbial fuel cell system with reverse electrodialysis, which captures the energy of ions as they flow through membranes from salty to fresh water. The fuel cell gives the energy boost for the reverse electrodialysis system, allowing the process to operate with fewer membranes and making the system cheaper to produce. The result is purified water that is free of bacteria and safe to drink.

So far, the amount of energy Logan says he can generate ?almost matches the amount needed to process it,? according to GOOD. That means Logan is closer to his goal of cost-effective clean energy wastewater treatment, and households, companies, and farms are closer to having cheaper, cleaner, greener water.

Canadian engineers harness African sun: In Angola, solar cells are already producing cleaner water. Canadian technology company Quest Water Solutions has teamed up with the Angolan government to develop and install drinking stations called ?AQUAtaps,? which use solar energy to purify drinking water inside used shipping containers.

Quest hopes that after a successful pilot program, the AQUAtaps will be manufactured locally throughout Angola.

The technology is ?really quite simple and very low maintenance,? according to Quest?s John Balanko. The shipping containers, with solar panels on top, contain large batteries which store energy. That electricity pumps water from a nearby river through sand and filters, then sterilizes the water with the same UV rays that feed the panels.

The AQUAtap fits nicely with the Angolan government?s ?Agua para Todas? (water for all) initiative. Quest sells the equipment, and a two- year maintenance guarantee, to the government for a one-time fee, but it then belongs to the villagers. Once the program expands, Quest envisions local production jobs as well.

For Angolans, the AQUAtap project can bring clean water and local jobs with virtually no carbon emissions in the process. Now there?s a solution people can raise their glasses to.

Bobby Kotick: Message to American Veterans: Unemployed Veterans Deserve Call to Duty

As our veterans return from serving abroad to renew their lives as civilians, they must confront a new battle at home -- a country still facing persistent unemployment and sluggish economic growth. The heroes who put so much on the line to serve our country are now encountering the real danger of joining a generation of veterans whose rate of joblessness significantly exceeds the population as a whole.

According to the Employment Situation of Veterans' annual report which was released this week from The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans who served post 9/11 attacks was 12.1 percent in 2011, compared with the jobless rate for all veterans of 8.3 percent. Those hit the hardest from that group are our young male veterans, ages 18-24, which have an unemployment rate of 29.1 percent, higher than the 17.6 percent jobless rate of their young male non-veteran counterparts.

While the Federal Government is trying its best, there is one school of thought that says it's not a public policy issue in the first place. It's private enterprise that can create jobs and fill them. It's business that can train people and make them productive tax-payers. And it's America Inc. that has the most to gain from tapping this extraordinary human resource. With so many new veterans -- tested in battle, but novices in the job market -- looking for work, it will take a broad-based effort by American business to meet the needs of these returning warriors. America Inc. must embrace the challenge.

Fortunately, circumstances favor a major push by American business to recruit and hire veterans. First, there is broad consensus that the men and women of the American military have done a stellar job over the past 10 years and are owed a tremendous debt of gratitude. That wasn't the case in previous homecomings, in particularly after Vietnam. Many of those veterans paid the price for an unpopular war. Today is different. No matter where people stand on the policies that led to the conflicts, Americans recognize the depth of sacrifice and patriotism of our men and women in uniform. Everyone agrees these heroes deserve every advantage we can give them. Second, the infrastructure to help is in place. There are dozens of non-profits focused on helping returning veterans tackle the job market. What those existing organizations need are more resources. That's where American business can make the difference. There are four steps every company in the United States can take:

(1) Commit -- Resolve as an enterprise to identify and take actions to change the employment landscape for veterans as a group.

(2) Affiliate -- Find an organization or two to support, in particular those groups that provide veterans with the job placement, education and training needed to launch successful post-military lives.

(3) Act -- When hiring, recruit veterans; if expansion isn't in the picture, direct corporate giving towards veterans groups that provide employment assistance. Consider undertaking training, internships, apprenticeships or mentoring programs aimed at vets.

(4) Network -- Approach customers, vendors and other businesses and ask them to take part. Put vet hiring on the radar screen of local chambers of commerce and trade associations.

Would such an approach work? Certainly, the worthy non-profits exist. When Activision assembled an advisory council to find suitable veterans' organizations, it came back with more than half a dozen. In the last two years, organizations supported by a non-profit that Activision funds -- The Call of Duty Endowment -- have helped 700 vets find jobs and provided training and mentorship to another 2,500. This week, General James L. Jones USMC (RET.), former U.S. National Security Advisor, joined as my Co-Chairman of the Endowment in order to help shine a brighter light on this issue and expand our efforts.

Individual companies can make a difference too. In the last year, Activision has hired 70 former service members. Our business partners and studios have hired another 300. The model is simple. The impact is real. Imagine if thousands of U.S. companies got involved. Our returning vets are a huge untapped asset for commerce.

Veterans have the skills employers want -- discipline, motivation, leadership and the ability to work on a team. They have made the U.S. military the most effective and respected in the world. As America Inc. works to recover and compete on a global scale, what better resource could we add to our workforce? Our troops are home. It's time for American business to replace the yellow ribbons with help wanted signs.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who authored the 1992 legislation that created the production tax credit, denied that charge and responded that Democrats were playing politics with an amendment that the Senate voted down on Tuesday.

?I haven?t had any conversation with any Republican that would lead me to that conclusion,? Grassley, a Finance Committee member, told National Journal Wednesday. ?It?s never been talked about in our caucus. Even when we?ve had meetings of Republicans just on the Finance Committee, that?s never been there.?

Both the production tax credit and the Bush-era tax cuts are set to expire at the end of 2012. Proponents of the wind incentive are fighting to extend it now because they say the industry needs lead time to plan and order turbines.

GOP Conference Chairman John Thune, R-S.D., who said he supports the wind tax credit, also denied that his party?s leadership was withholding support for passing it because of the Bush-era tax cuts.??It?s not like we?re holding it back,? Thune said.

The production tax credit has an unusual degree of GOP support, given that it embodies two policies that the Republican Party has become more critical of since the tea party gained influence in the 2010 midterm elections: renewable energy and subsidies.

Thune, Grassley, and four other GOP senators: John Boozman?of Arkansas,?Scott Brown?of Massachusetts, John Hoeven?of North Dakota, and Pat Roberts of Kansas, along with several Democrats signed a letter to Senate leadership late last month urging extension of the tax credit.

They all opposed an amendment, sponsored by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., that was defeated in a 49-49 vote on Tuesday. Along with the wind-energy tax credit and several other clean-energy tax incentives, her amendment also included a Treasury Department grant program that the Obama administration created in its 2009 stimulus package. A range of renewable-energy industries use the grant program, but it benefits the solar sector the most. Anything that?s associated with President Obama?s stimulus is a deal-breaker for Republicans.

?I almost think that the politics was played on the side with the amendment by the senator from Michigan,? Grassley said. ?We had all these things going for us and all these other energy extenders -- why put in something that will get all Republicans going against it??I didn?t want to be associated with these grants that have led to bankruptcies that will cost taxpayers a lot of money."

Sen. Mark? Udall, D-Colo., told National Journal on Tuesday he would keep trying to pass the tax credit before the end of the year, possibly by attaching it to the jobs bill the House passed last week when or if the Senate brings it up.

Grassley said he would ?look at anything? to get it passed?as long as the grant program is not included.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to hold a one-day policy meeting later Tuesday, and the oil market will be watching closely for any hint the central bank is considering stimulus measures to boost economic growth.

Analysts are also eyeing the possibility that global crude producers won't be able to boost output enough to match demand if Iran's 4 million barrels a day of production is cut.

"Global spare capacity has been dwindling, and crude demand is about to start rising seasonally," said Citigroup, which expects Brent to average $130 in the third quarter. "Recent developments point to higher oil prices to come and the odds of a spike to new peaks rises."

Crude has jumped from $96 last month amid investor concern that growing tensions over Iran's nuclear program could spark a military conflict that disrupts global crude supplies. Titan Energy to acquire ownership stake in Illinois oil project

Australian oil and gas company Titan Energy Energy has inked an agreement to earn up to an 81% interest in a ready-to-drill hydrocarbon producing prospect in Illinois, the US.

The company will pay $96,000 in lease fees to Pharis Petroleum Corporation for the 160 acre Franklin Prospect project.

Titan Energy will earn the stake by paying 96% of the estimated drilling costs of $225,750 up to the point where production casing is run and cemented.

Titan Energy managing director Stephen Thomas said one of the things that attracted the company to this asset is the shallow targets that are available.

"Additionally, the area has a good record as a consistent, hydrocarbon producer," Thomas said.

"This acquisition, along with our recently announced agreement to acquire an interest in the high impact Allen Dome project in Texas, is a good example of the capabilities that Titan has to acquire quality, international assets to support our Australian projects."

Once the acquisition is completed, Titan Energy will become operator of the Franklin Prospect project.

The company has already contracted Illiana Energy to drill its initial vertical exploration well in the lease area to a depth of 3150 feet in the second quarter of 2012.

Titan plans to complete drilling in the Aux Vases and McClosky zones for a conventional test of the Midyett South Aux Vases sandstone oil reservoir at the western end of the Dale/Thompsonville Oil Field Complex.

The Franklin Prospect project is located in the Midyett South Development Project in Franklin County, Illinois, which is based within the Illinois petroleum structural basin, comprised of southern Illinois, south western Indiana, and western Kentucky.

The basin has produced an estimated 4.5 billion barrels of crude oil from Paleozoic reservoirs.
